New LTR Visa Criteria Adjusted for Flexibility and to Attract Global Talent

To attract financially capable individuals and global experts, Thailand has introduced a special Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa. Recently, the criteria have been updated to align with government policies and increase flexibility.

What is an LTR Visa, and how is it different from regular visas for foreigners?
Typically, work visas for foreigners in Thailand are valid for a maximum of one year and require 90-day reporting. In contrast, the LTR Visa is designed to attract high-potential foreign individuals to live and invest in Thailand—especially in industrial zones. It offers superior benefits, including extended stay duration, multiple entries, relaxed reporting requirements, dependent allowances, and tax privileges.

LTR Visa Categories
Eligible applicants are divided into four groups:
  • Highly Skilled Professionals
  • Work-from-Thailand Professionals (working remotely for overseas employers)
  • Wealthy Global Citizens
  • Wealthy Pensioners
Benefits of the LTR Visa
Beyond offering a 10-year visa with unlimited re-entry, LTR Visa holders also enjoy:
  • Reduced immigration reporting (once a year instead of every 90 days)
  • Flat personal income tax rate of 17% for skilled professionals
  • Exemption from the 4:1 Thai-to-foreigner employment ratio
  • Access to Fast Track lanes at international airports
  • Streamlined work permit and residency applications
Recent Adjustments to the Criteria (Effective January 15, 2025)
To enhance accessibility and attract more talent, key changes include:
  • Expanded eligibility to cover university lecturers, researchers, and vocational professionals to support human capital development in Thailand.
  • Relaxed work experience requirements for remote professionals to reduce entry barriers.
  • Lowered income threshold for overseas employers from USD 150 million to USD 50 million (within the first 3 years). Parent company revenue can now be considered for subsidiaries, supporting startups and tech experts.
  • For wealthy applicants, the income requirement is replaced with a minimum investment of USD 500,000 in Thai assets or long-term investments.
  • Broader dependent allowance now includes not only spouses and children, but also parents and caregivers, with no quantity limit.
Application Process
LTR Visa applications can be submitted entirely online. Processing takes around 20 days. After qualification approval:
  1. Apply for visa issuance at a Thai Embassy, Consulate, or Immigration Office within 60 days (Fee: THB 50,000 per person)
  2. If working in Thailand, apply for a digital work permit at the Visa and Work Permit Service Center (Chamchuri Square) or a provincial labor office (Fee: THB 3,000 per person)
